Local to New England

Have beeswax, will travel

Sometimes in alchemical and apothecary recipes a note will say “ex Arte” — it means “according to Art,” or, more generally, that the next step in the recipe should be done based on the maker’s training or experience.

Unfortunately, there aren’t a whole lot of Early English apothecaries running around these days taking on apprentices, and not everybody is as interested as me in spending a couple of years blowing up their kitchens to learn how to do this stuff. I live in New England, and I like teaching — drop me a line if you’re interested in bringing me around for a group workshop or a one-on-one class to make the 1711 pomatum for the lips, the 1696 rosewater pearl cold cream, or the plausibly Regency-era scent The Green Knight.
