Monition of Cursing

With the original 1525 Scots and an English translation on facing pages

An edited, pocket-sized, saddle-stitched minizine with text from Gavin Dunbar, the Archbishop of Glasgow’s, great monition of cursing on the border reivers of 1525.

Edited by me to fit an 8-page octavo-sized booklet, each minizine is a stapled volume approximately 2”x3”, with a front and back cover, 14 interior pages, and totally over-the-top curse language.

To allow for the original poetry of this curse to come through while still providing an idea of what’s actually being said, this minizine is formatted to provide the original Scots on one page and an English translation on the other. Using the Biggar Archaeological Group’s translation as a base, I did additional work using the Dictionaries of the Scots Language databases and New Advent’s Catholic Encyclopedia to provide a more nuanced and, hopefully, more faithful translation that doesn’t sacrifice the absolute banana-ness of the original text.

Made in limited quantities, Monition of Cursing is on its second printing (correcting the date on the cover, whoops); preorders encouraged due to handmade nature of the minizine!

I typically sell these pocket guides for $5 each; contact me if interested in a larger number and/or a shipping estimate.
