It’s not a fucking race thing, an unpronounceable name is a burden upon any person, both socially and professionally. She will have to deal with 12 years of teachers being unable to pronounce her name and her peers making fun of her. That is something no parent should inflict upon their children

I’m so angry about that sentence. Her name is pronounceable. All names are. My name is so easy to pronounce but I’ve gone through 2 decades of “What? Amelia? Amia? Ameener?”  It’s Ameena. Said how it looks.  With emphasis on the mean because I’m a huge bitch that’s tired of white people being clueless about things like this. And don’t get me started on my last name and 2 years of being called a ridiculous name because white supremacist standards can be perpetuated by even little black children who’ve been poisoned by it.

The thing is that white people have a history of erasing the names our people have had for hundreds of years in favor of something better. You’ve left this behind in colonies that are no longer white ruled but I still go by Amy because locals find it so hard to say Ah Meen Ah. 

Quavenzhane is easy to pronounce. Little black and brown children have beautiful names and if you cannot wrap your lips around them and then blame the child you are a terrible and racist person. Racist because like I mentioned, this is a thing that’s been done historically. The only thing is white people went from naming slaves John, naming a native boy put in catholic school away from his parents Henry, from laughing at names like Latchmi when your people entered india, to this; to laughing at the names of black and brown children and asking why its so hard to pronounce instead of asking how to pronounce it. You’ve layered this as a standard of treatment for names that aren’t english christian, even other PoC laugh at the names of their own people. 

An unpronounceable name is transformed into a burden via white supremacy.
